Abstract
This article integrates Katz's schematic based theory of emotion [1, 2] and Deikman's theory of deautomization [3] in an effort to understand the relation between altered states of consciousness and emotion. The integration of these theories suggests specific ways in which emotional experience might be affected by changes in consciousness, and the effect of social factors on emotion during altered (and baseline) states. A schematic basis for distinguishing between altered states and within state variations is suggested.
