Caring is the essence of nursing; however, caring behaviors may not be identifiable in the health care environment today. Relationship-Based Care (RBC) provides an avenue to promote a caring environment. This article describes the process one hospital used to implement RBC in their organization.

To provide a relaxing environment during breaks or after stressful events, a section of the storage room was cordoned off with bookcases and turned into a place of serenity. Plants, relaxing music and a small water fountain enhance the serene atmosphere, along with specific rules about silence and respect (no talking, cell phones, beepers, complaining, or gossip)..
