Introduction: «Europe», and the Politics of Non-Western Elites, 1900–1930
«Europe» played an important role in the politics of non-western elites in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These introductory remarks sketch the historiographical frame within which the following articles should be situated. They deal particularly with the concept of «Occidentalism» and the appropriation of «Europe» that transcends simple notions of reception and images; with the question of agency of non-western elites; and, finally, with questions of periodization.
