Abstract
As evidenced by their significant numbers in American households and the important roles they play in the living environment of humans, animals are key stakeholders in our communities. They enrich our communities in myriad ways, and their challenges mirror those faced by other community stakeholders: the need for adequate nourishment, comfortable housing, health care, safety, and stability. Despite the prevalent and symbiotic nature of human–animal relationships, few social service agencies collect baseline information about them or provide supportive resources, hindering both enhancement of the value animals bring to communities as well as resolution of challenges. Inclusion of pets in social service programs and policy initiatives will enable a more comprehensive approach and improve community health.
