Abstract
In this essay, Leavy discusses the 2016 release of her novel Blue. When Blue was released, Leavy publicly stated it was her favorite and most personal book, which precipitated a flood of e-mails from both friends and strangers asking whether she was a particular character in the book. Leavy challenges the idea that something must be autobiographical to be personal and explains what is actually personal about the book by sharing the childhood experiences that inspired the setting.
