Introducing: Capstone Articles

It is my pleasure to introduce a new, occasional section in the Journal of Histochemistry & Cytochemistry: Capstone Articles. The Histochemical Society awards Capstone Grants to undergraduates to support their biomedical research with prioritization given to those whose work utilizes histochemical techniques. The new Capstone Articles section recognizes the research productivity of the Capstone Awardees. It is only fitting that the Society’s Journal highlights this research. While publication in the Journal of Histochemistry & Cytochemistry is not a condition of the grants, it is nevertheless encouraged. These manuscripts undergo the same rigorous peer-review as every other paper submitted to the journal; however, the scope and scale of the manuscripts from Capstone Awardees are allowed to be more concise than is expected of a regular research article. The articles are stand-alone works and will appear in PubMed.

The January 2020 issue features “Tissue-specific Fixation Methods Are Required for Optimal In Situ Visualization of Hyaluronan in the Ovary, Kidney, and Liver” co-authored by Capstone Awardee, Gillian E. Rubenstein.

Although I would enjoy the opportunity to feature a Capstone Articles section in every issue, the presence of these articles is entirely dependent on both the awarding of Capstone Grants by The Histochemical Society and the subsequent submission of high-quality manuscripts to JHC. Just as research mentors have the obligation of supporting and promoting the scientific efforts of their trainees, as Editor-in-Chief, I bear the same obligation to promote and publish the scientists of the future.
