Factor analysis has been applied to the analysis of the x-ray-induced decomposition of sodium Perchlorate, which yields chlorate and chloride as products. The analysis indicates that the chlorate ion cannot be an intermediate in the perchlorate-to-chloride reduction, as has been reported. A new mechanism consistent with the analysis and rate data for the decomposition are discussed.
