The introduction of the Varian A-60 NMR spectrometer in 1961 made possible the routine utilization of this tremendously important technique in many laboratories. At that time there were, however, a number of difficulties with both the A-60 and the NMR technique itself. The major instrumental developments which have been made in an effort to solve these problems are discussed in this review. A tabulation of the characteristics of the presently available commercial instruments is given.
The story of the events which led to the development of the Varian A-60 was presented in addresses given by RogersEmeryPackardMartin, and ShooleryJames at the 25th annual meeting of the Industrial Research Institute, Inc., 16 May 1963 in San Francisco. These addresses were reprinted by Varian Associates.
