Ten Years of Aid to Applied Absorption Spectroscopy by A.S.T.M. Committee E-13

Abstract

To mark the tenth anniversary of the founding of the committee, the scope of activity, organization, accomplishments, current programs, and unsolved problems are reviewed Outstanding accomplishments of sub-committees include publication of (a) recommended nomenclature, (b) methods for objectively evaluating the performance of spectrophotometers, (c) general techniques of infrared and ultraviolet quantitative analysis, (d) a recommended form of ASTM methods involving absorption spectroscopy, and (e) an ever-expanding index of absorption spectral data now comprising almost 100,000 cards designed for machine sorting, encompassing the ultraviolet, visible, near-infrared, and infrared ranges. The nature, uses, and advantages of the index are described briefly

In recent months, new subcommittees were established to serve the fields of molecular fluorescence and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy These subcommittees are active in sponsoring symposia. The unsolved problems of committee activity in the newer and older fields of spectroscopy are summarized.
