Abstract
The method is applicable to the determination of cerium in cast iron, carbon and stainless steel. The cerium is co-precipitated with barium as fluorides in an hydrochloric-perchloric acid solution. The ignited precipitate is analyzed spectrographically using the D.C. arc. The lowest detectable amount is of the order of .003% cerium for stainless and somewhat lower for iron and steel.
Synthetic standards for comparison are made by the addition of a standardized cerium solution to a cerium-free alloy similar to the unknown and then carried through the procedure simultaneously.
