The material is presented in a CD that requires Windows 95 or above for use. The CD was authored by David McEwan Jenkinson of the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland, in conjunction with the Free University of Berlin. The CD is the product of CLIVE, the computer-aided-learning projects of the Veterinary Schools in the UK.
The CD seeks to provide a broad understanding of the purpose of the skin. The CD is easy to use and is subdivided into a number of sections, including the importance of the skin and the challenge it faces both externally and internally, macrodiversity, and microdiversity. One section deals with the external examination of skin and examination of skin by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, histochemistry, and immunohistochemistry. At the end of each section is a quiz.
This CD is primarily intended for an advanced biology course in school or an undergraduate course in biology. This CD is too basic for veterinary pathologists. All this material and more can be found in the basic texts in veterinary histology and pathology. Although over 1,000 references are provided, the most useful part of the CD for a veterinary pathologist, there is a warning on opening the CD that it was published more than 2 years ago and can no longer be relied upon to be up-to-date.
