Abstract

Handbook of Toxicologic Pathology is a two volume set consisting of 44 chapters written by well known and experienced scientists. The three sections in Volume I discuss the scope of toxicologic pathology, including philosophical issues, and changes caused by selected toxicants. Volume II takes a systems approach to discuss the anatomy, pathophysiology of organ changes, and physical changes noted in organ systems when exposed to a wide range of toxicants. All the major systems are discussed and a section on embryo/fetus is included. Toxicity testing for each system is discussed in some detail. The references are at the end of each chapter and they are listed by section. These references have been updated where appropriate and they are appropriate for this text. The index is found in Volume II and it is sufficiently detailed to provide ready access to the narrative text. Black and white histologic photographs are used to illustrate histomorphologic changes in tissues and there are a small number of color plates. The tables used to summarize information and the excellent diagrams complement the text.
Both the first edition, published in 1991, and this edition use a similar style and format. This latest edition has much more discussion of the discipline of toxicologic pathology and general problems associated with this discipline. The authors have updated respective sections and included current references.
I had some minor concerns about chapter organization and quality of the photographs used in this text. Volume I opens with a discussion of the field of toxicologic pathology closely followed by discussions of general pathology. Subsequent chapters revisit the field of toxicologic pathology, which are interspersed amid chapters dealing with general pathology and specific toxicants. Particularly in the section covering general pathology, the quality of some of the black and white photographs is poor.
The Handbook of Toxicologic Pathology is an excellent reference text that is quite readable. While this text is obviously written for the toxicologic pathologist, the technical parts are appropriate for all veterinary pathologists, both experienced and those in training. The information given as to anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, morphologic changes and general pathology make this text must reading for anyone planning to sit the anatomical veterinary pathology boards.
