Abstract

I am very pleased to announce that the ACVP has contracted with Allen Press for web-based manuscript submission and review services and with HighWire Press for online publication of Veterinary Pathology.
AllenTrack is the online manuscript tracking system provided by Allen Press. Using this system, all aspects of the review process can be carried out online: submitting new and revised manuscripts, identifying and contacting reviewers, transmitting text and figures among author, editor, reviewers, and publisher, and preparation of manuscripts for publication. The system is completely secure, and online help is available. No special software is required for the author, editor, or reviewer. AllenTrack automatically transforms Word text files and TIF image files into PDF files. Customizing AllenTrack for Veterinary Pathology began in January of this year and is expected to be complete by 30 June 2003. During the conversion from paper-based to electronic manuscript review, the editorial office will request selected authors to submit new or revised manuscripts online. After 30 June 2003, online submission will be required, except in special circumstances. For more information about AllenTrack, please access the following website: http://www.allentrack.net.
HighWire Press is operated by Stanford University. HighWire is the world's premier online publisher, with 346 scientific and medical journals currently online and many more to come. HighWire publishes some of the journals with the highest impact factors, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Science, and Blood. Information previously available on the Veterinary Pathology website will soon be moved to the journal's new HighWire site http://www.vetpathology.org. This HighWire site is expected to debut in March, 2003. The site will contain the last three years of Veterinary Pathology articles in full text format. Material from previous years in PDF format will be added later. To experience the remarkable variety and convenience of HighWire features and to examine their range of publications, please visit their website at http://highwire.stanford.edu. All present subscribers to the journal will have full access to the electronic version of the journal when it becomes available.
Please check the ACVP website at www.acvp.org or the old Veterinary Pathology website at http://www.afip.org/acvp/Vet_Pathol/VetPathol1.htm for updates on the status of AllenTrack and HighWire implementation. Electronic manuscript submission and review are expected to accelerate manuscript review, to reduce mailing and FAXing costs associated with the review process, and to reduce publication expenses. Online publication of Veterinary Pathology will dramatically increase the visibility and accessibility of the journal. I anticipate these changes with great enthusiasm. I would like to thank Dr. Keith Harris (ACVP Council liaison for the journal), Dr. Mark Mense (Associate Editor for Electronic Media), Mary Schumacher (Executive Director of the ACVP), Polly Siegel of HighWire Press, and Anna Gramkow of Allen Press for making it possible for Veterinary Pathology to move forward confidently into the era of electronic publication.
