Abstract

Pathology of the Liver is a comprehensive textbook about the numerous conditions affecting the human liver. The book is divided into 18 chapters covering many topics, including pathophysiology, metabolic diseases, iron storage diseases, infectious hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, diseases of bile ducts and gallbladder, vascular disorders, cirrhosis, hepatic injury due to drugs and toxins, neoplasia, and liver biopsies. Chapters are written by contributors from all continents.
This edition returns to the concept of the lobule to characterize liver injury, which in the mind of the authors is readily understood by both pathologists and clinicians. The epidemiology, clinical features, pathology, and pathogenesis of each condition are discussed. The book is extensively illustrated with higher-quality color photographs, with many examples of special histochemical stains and immunohistochemistry useful in the examination of liver changes. Figure captions are fully descriptive. Numerous schemata and tables support the text, which is well written and comprehensive. Animal models are often mentioned, and zoonotic diseases are discussed. Each chapter has an extensive number of references. The table of contents is not exhaustive, but the index seems well constructed.
This book is very useful reference for academic and diagnostic veterinary pathologists interested in the pathology of the liver and in comparative pathology. The chapter on hepatic injury due to drugs and toxins is of interest to toxicopathologists.
