The extraordinary events of recent weeks have served to magnify the growing divergence between government and police in a way not experienced for decades. The ‘criminal riots' that engulfed both London and a number of our regional cities created a situation where the police service was hard pushed to provide the necessary level of response in seeking to protect the public.
