Abstract
This study focused on recruiting practices in state police organisations. A survey was mailed to the 49 state police agencies and state highway patrols in the United States. Numerous advertising and recruiting methods were employed by the responding departments. Traditional advertising methods were seen by respondents as relatively ineffectual and aggressive face-to-face recruiting efforts at job fairs and community gatherings were deemed more effective. The use of internet websites also showed promise for increasing the number of viable candidates.
