Abstract
Statins are currently the most widely used drug class for the management of dyslipidemia. Their benefits for both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are well established. With the increasingly widespread use of statins, questions have been raised about a potential link between statin use and new onset type II diabetes. Evidence for this association was further strengthened by a recent study using data from the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), which reported an increased risk of diabetes with statin use in postmenopausal women. This article will provide an overview of the study findings and discuss implications for clinical practice.
