Abstract
The Director's Forum series is written and edited by Robert J. Weber and Scott M. Mark and is designed to guide pharmacy leaders in establishing patient-centered services in hospitals and health systems. During the next several years, much will be written and presented on implementing the recommendations of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists' Pharmacy Practice Model Initiative (PPMI). Developing a practice model vision is not unique to pharmacy. Nursing, medicine, and others have developed their vision of new practice models in responding to the challenges of health care. A pharmacy director implementing practice model change can successfully use the lessons learned from the professional practice models of other health care professions. Pharmacy directors all too often take a myopic view of their department, focusing only on issues impacting their daily operations. By gaining a further understanding of other professional practice models, pharmacy directors can maximize the benefits of their practice model changes to best focus on meeting the medication needs of patients.
