Abstract
Ongoing initiatives within the private and public health sectors underscore the blurred line between care that patients receive in the community and care that is provided in health care institutions. The quest for interoperability of information systems further indicates that information must be shared across locations and levels of care. One component of this need to share information focuses on providers having access to information that patients maintain or that is generated through patients' activities. This column addresses the sharing of that information.
