The Environment of E-prescribing and Its Impact on the Pharmacy Department

Abstract

This month we address a topic that initially may seem a process that only affects our colleagues in the community but of which we believe all pharmacists should be aware: electronic prescribing, or e-prescribing. An overview of e-prescribing is provided, including a brief historical perspective, the government's role, obstacles, and incentives. We conclude with a discussion of the relevance of e-prescribing to hospitals and departments of pharmacy.
