Abstract
This paper investigates elastic buckling of inter-braced parallel beams when beams are not equally loaded. For beams under uniform bending, analytical solutions and approximate solutions using the Rayleigh-Ritz method are obtained respectively, and it is found that they agree with the exact solutions excellently. The Rayleigh-Ritz method is further used to study inter-braced parallel beams subjected to uniformly distributed loads and concentrated loads at mid-spans, and approximate interactive relations of the two buckling moments for mono-symmetric section beams are obtained, which can include the effects of load height, positions of bracing, shapes of bending moment diagrams, and mono-symmetry of the cross-section. The approximate formulae are in good agreement with those of the Rayleigh-Ritz method and also with those obtained from ANSYS using shell elements.
