Equilibrium Shapes and Forces Incurred by Lifting a Heavy,Segmented Rod from One End

Abstract

A segmented rod, composed of heavy rigid links joined by hinges with rotational resistance, is gradually lifted off the ground from one end. The equilibrium shape is governed by a non linear difference equation with two unknown parameters. The solution scheme yields a non linear lifting force–lifted height relation.
