Abstract
The load carrying capacity of steel structures is in many cases limited by the stability check. In general, two types of overall stability failure can occur: Lateral torsional buckling. and in the case of restrained torsional deformations flexural buckling. Therefore, the rules for buckling are one of the most used important issues and therefore are of great interest for design in practice. For the conversion of Eurocode 3 (ENV 1992-1-1: 1993) to an EN code, extensive works were especially done by several researchers for flexural buckling. This paper gives an overview of the new European flexural buckling design concept and other proposals taken into account in the evaluation. Test results and extensive ultimate load calculations are considered for a statistical analysis. Comparisons between ultimate load calculations are discussed with respect to an easy formulation of the design concept.
