Abstract
An experimental setup for investigation of transverse vibrational characteristics of bars is described. Characteristics of granite, marble and ceramic are investigated at varying frequencies in the free-free mode. Energy dissipation at the fundamental frequency and overtones are analyzed. Vibrational characteristics of metals like aluminium, brass and copper are examined and compared. Young's modulus for each of these materials is evaluated from their frequency response characteristics. Resonance broadening due to surface coating and changes in the medium of vibration is discussed. An algorithm is developed to simulate overtones, phase velocities, wavelengths and nodal positions, in order to verify experimental values.
