Abstract
Noise from car components is more noticeable in today's quieter cars. SKF Engineers have looked at power steering units, to tracking down and reduce noise. Results suggest that vibration of the pinion seal is the most common noise source. Two elastomer materials were tested for noise over a range of temperatures, pressures and shaft speeds, resulting in a new proposed criterion for predicting vibration in seals and other rubber frictional components.
