This is a short review of current offshore wind energy projects funded from institutional sources in Europe, especially relevant in the UK. The funding bodies are the European Commission, the UK Department of Trade and Industry, and the UK's Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The work of the UK-based Offshore Wind Energy Network (OWEN) is also briefly reviewed, with justification given for a UK Offshore wind energy programme.
