Abstract
It is well known that studies about lightweight and spatial structures are not often included in the normal curriculum in schools of architecture and engineering, so the present work deals with the experience in teaching this subject, and how this knowledge is transmitted to architecture students at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in México. In order to improve architects' knowledge about lightweight structures, basic concepts of “Structural Systems” are taught in regular courses, complementing them periodically, with other special courses which are taught by guest professors from other countries, working at well known research centres, who participates with the assistance of our own professors. A lightweight structures laboratory was created where students apply their acquired knowledge.
