Abstract
An outline of how the Public Inquiry came about and AvMA's role as a core participant. We look at some of the evidence heard and the key themes of the Inquiry and indicate some of the issues that AvMA hope to see dealt with in the final Report. The Inquiry concluded its hearing of evidence and submissions on 1 December 2011, and the Chair is now preparing his report which is expected in June 2012. Further examination of the Report and its implications for the Health Service, and for future patient involvement and the instigation of a statutory Duty of Candour, will be published in Part 2 of this article after publication of the report.
