In an important minority of hypertensive patients, hypertension is secondary to an identifiable primary condition. Failure to consider secondary hypertension may result in failure to diagnose and treat harmful or life-threatening primary causes, and also ineffective blood pressure management. This article reviews the main causes of secondary hypertension, with an emphasis on their clinical clues and whom to investigate, along with their management options.
