The value chain is a familiar concept in management theory. In the article ‘From Value Chain to Value Constellation’ in the July/August 1993 issue of Harvard Business Review, Richard Normann and Rafael Ramirez said ‘every company occupies a position on a value chain. Upstream, suppliers provide inputs. The company then adds value to these inputs, before passing them downstream to the next actor in the chain, the customer (whether another business or the final consumer)’. On page 68 of their article, they argued that ‘under the impact of information technology and the resulting globalization of markets and production, new methods of combining activities into offerings are producing new opportunities for creating value”, which they describe as the ‘value constellation’
