Abstract
In the 1990s we developed a remote mobile vital signs monitor, VitalLink. We recently compared the capabilities of this product with the wider requirements of our existing and potential customer base. This led to a new system, Vital Link-cubed, which is modular and capable of integrating with existing systems as well as new ones. No minimum data connection speed was assumed, so the system can use almost any data-enabled communications for remote access. It can operate at extremely low bandwidths (2400 bit/s) to allow for ubiquitous access, e.g. via satellite. Likewise, for greatest uptake, it was assumed that the majority of potential users would wish to use their existing systems, both medical and IT. Our software developer's kit also allows the developers of electronic patient record systems to integrate with our architecture very easily. The resulting system offers a simple and straightforward method of building a truly integrated global approach to healthcare.
