Abstract
This article discusses medicolegal and patient safety issues relating to the most commonly performed surgical operation in the UK. Patient safety incidents in cataract surgery are discussed and preventive measures at organizational and individual levels are outlined. Claims relating to cataract surgery account for one-third of settled claims in ophthalmology. The nature of cataract surgery claims is reviewed and ways to avoid ending up in court are recommended.
