Comparative morphological and functional aspects of the aorta of the major vertebrate classes

Abstract

A lamellar unit structure is present throughout the subphylum. From measurements of the change in diameter of the aorta in response to increased pressure, strain values were calculated for the aorta of species of reptiles, birds and mammals. Differences may be relevant to the development of degenerative vascular disease in these orders.
