Lungs of rats kept under conventional conditions are histologically distinguishable from those of rats of a caesarian-derived colony after the age of about 5 weeks. The lungs of rats from this caesarian-derived colony, which has been maintained by a simple and inexpensive technique for seven years, are free from chronic respiratory disease.
