The histology of the oral mucosa of Macaca irus was studied in nineteen monkeys. It was found that the oral mucosa of this monkey is identical with that of man. No single specimen of M. irus had orthokeratinization of the gingivae in all regions. In addition, those sections of gingiva which exhibited orthokeratosis had a poorly developed granular layer. Thus it seems unlikely that keratohyalin granules contribute towards keratinization; they probably represent cytoplasmic debris.
