Studies of the near infrared (NIR) classification of offset and flexo printed newspapers are presented. The spectroscopic basics of the classification are given and discussed. The classification method was developed on the basis of the PLS discriminant method and online NIR measurements with a process diode-array spectrometer using wavelengths from 1372 nm to 1875 nm. A classification accuracy of about 90% has been achieved.
