Abstract
The fragmentation of [M + Na]+ ions produced from steroid 11β-nitrates during electrospray ionization (ESI) was studied by using the ion trap MS/MS technique. The [M + Na]+ ions eliminate NO2 and HNO3 for epimers bearing 9β and 9α substituents, respectively. As the main fragmentation pathways are determined mainly by the configuration at C-9 and alternative fragmentation hardly occur, this offers the possibility for deteermining the configurationof the estrane 11β nitrate series at the chiral C-9 center using ESI mass spectrometry.
