The structures of m/z 44 and m/z 45 fragment ions from ionized 1,4–dioxane were reinvestigated by means of ion–molecule reactions and appearance energy (AE) measurements. They are found to be ionized vinyl alcohol (m/z 44) and protonated acetaldehyde (m/z 45), respectively. The same AE value is found for both ions, suggesting a common intermediate.
