Abstract
This paper presents a band variable-inertia flywheel (BVIF) concept for the intermediate storage of recoverable energy for usage in the stop-go operation of a transit bus. A mathematical model is presented for the dynamics of the flywheel system and some numerical results are presented for an evaluation of the performance of the BVIF system integrated into the ‘real-life’ operation of a bus. A considerable fuel saving and extended brake shoe life have been demonstrated.
