By reviewing a very old patent on self-locking central wheel nuts, this paper explains why present-day racing car wheels sometimes come loose and why their behaviour appears to be erratic. Experimental work confirms the conclusions drawn. The solution to the problem lies in reverting to the concept described in the original patent.
