The development of pressurized fluidized bed combustion (PFBC) has reached the stage where the technology is available on a commercial basis. Four plants are operating with further units either on order or being commissioned. This paper describes the basis for PFBC, the technical issues that have been resolved, with particular reference to British experiences, the development route being undertaken and options for system enhancement.
