Abstract
Over the last five years, an exciting transformation has been taking place at British Aerospace's Chadderton facilities at Greengate, just inside the Oldham Borough boundary. A large and complex manufacturing organization has been transformed from a programme-driven cost centre to an autonomous business unit, operating within the British Aerospace corporate structure.
Developments at the Chadderton plant are setting the pace in a fast-changing industry. A frank and honest evaluation of the competences and strengths has been essential, and this has led to the development of strategies to achieve world-class benchmark performance. The process has been a necessary evolution to catch up and overtake the competition; it has also been traumatic and exciting, and demonstrates the potential that exists in our traditional manufacturing businesses.
