Abstract
Britain's railways stand at the threshold of the biggest change that has been seen for half a century. The author's theme is the impact of engineering and organizational changes on people in the railway industry. The management of this change demands understanding of the technology being applied, as well as the changes in practice and behaviour which are needed for it to be successful. The author relates these issues to the people he has worked with throughout his career and the changes he has experienced.
