Abstract
Organizational trends are polarizing away from hierarchical divisions of labour towards a more fluid deployment based on multi-skilled teams and competent individuals. It is demonstrated that there are measurable efficiency advantages to be gained from such a transition. The paper demonstrates the feasibility of accomplishing the reorganization, the difficulties met and the implementation strategies resorted to. It is concluded that organizational efficiency can be improved by one order of magnitude. No organization would seem to require more than two or three functions aligned to its main strategic processes.
