Experiments are described that support analysis of the practical Stirling cycle in terms of linear waves. All aspects of the theoretical approach are corroborated, including the incidence of amplitude attenuation and marked phase shift between pressure-time records on either side of the matrix, together with the overriding importance of the dimensionless groups N MA and NSG in characterizing these features.
