Abstract
A computer aided design (CAD) modeller has been developed to facilitate the design of twist drills. A feature of the system is its ability to accept both the theoretical mathematical parameters used by drill theorists and those parameters used as standard nomenclature in the drill industry. Differences between the theoretical and ‘real’ drills are accounted for. The program presents a variety of views of the three-dimensional drill model and provides relevant numerical information. The CAD modeller is a platform for a greater computer aided engineering (CAE) system, which is involved from the initial design stage through to manufacture.
