Abstract
The performance of reciprocating pumps with self-acting valves is dependent upon the dynamic characteristics of the valves. Particularly when the pumps are working at high speed, delays in valve operation can lead to cavitation, reduction in volumetric efficiency and increased noise and wear. The behaviour of the valves is complex and difficult to predict.
A computer program for the modelling of the dynamic behaviour of such pumps has been developed. The mathematical models of the components are described in this paper. The modelling of the effects of cavitation is included. Results compare favourably with experimental measurements.
