Abstract
This paper describes the development of a self-organizing fuzzy autopilot for controlling the non-linear yaw dynamics of a warship. Simulation results are presented which demonstrate the autopilot's ability to operate over a wide range of ship speeds and course changes. An improved design methodology is also proposed which replaces the exhaustive experimental analysis normally associated with the formulation of self-organizing controllers.
