Abstract
The author outlines his educational background and early career before joining British Railways Research Department in 1969. He goes on to describe the new traction and rolling stock which has been developed in recent years and the major organizational changes which have taken place at British Rail to achieve greater accountability and customer focus. The author concludes his Address by describing the work that has taken place on the Channel Tunnel and future European developments such as the European High-Speed Network.
