This paper describes a co-operative education programme in mechanical and manufacturing engineering. The background and structure of the programme are considered together with the reasons for its evolution. The programme is offering significant benefits to academe, industrial sponsors and students. There is evidence to suggest that the programme has increased the overall quality of students applying to study mechanical and manufacturing engineering and that a need to supply high calibre technology based professionals who are directly useful to industry is being fulfilled.
